What motivates you to be thankful? The origins of our American Thanksgiving reside within the hearts of our grateful forefathers most notably established by President Abraham Lincoln who set aside the fourth Thursday of November as an official federal holiday. Lincoln gave God credit for the nation’s blessings: “They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy.” Indeed thankfulness is the way to maturity, joy, and peace. It is the connection we have with Our God and ourselves because it gives us a proper perspective of life’s ordinary moments, sorrows, and happiness. We would do well to be intentional regarding our gratitude and cultivate minds that are quick to be thankful as these ancient words admonish:
Philippians 4:8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.
