Not going to sulk…

Life is hard and we all feel it, experience it, and would like to run, hide, or just sulk. I fully admit to brooding and entertaining gloom over the news, a health issue, or relational strain. My faith and confidence is bolstered by a good song, a hearty hug, sound words, a comfort meal,  or a restful sleep. The image below was taken on a windy, cloudy, 33 degree day on a brief “therapy walk”. These remind me of the spunk and defiance we all need sometimes to shine brightly, to dance in the wind, and to allow our hearts to be filled with thanksgiving and pleasure. So here they are, the tender creation of One so much greater who knew just what I needed today. (And maybe, you as well) WM fb-9309

Blessings of Winter

Winter holds a clean, quiet, and almost sacred place in my heart. The fragility of a snowflake, the gentleness of snow flurries, and the discovery of beauty in the midst of gray and cold hold intrigue for me. Despite the discomfort of shoveling snow, freezing fingertips, uncertain steps, and snarled traffic, I find a longing and a calling to go to a place of quiet hush where the snowflakes catch my lashes, the cold air catches my breath, and the songbird sings despite the winter drab and chill. Maybe that is why the sunrise and sunsets seem much more brilliant, the blue of the sky on sun-filled days much more intense, and the warmth of the sun so welcomed. Life is like this season and I am looking and listening for the One who created all of it and authored redemption in all of our seasons.

It is the life of the crystal, the architect of the flake, the fire of the frost, the soul of the sunbeam. This crisp winter air is full of it. ~John Burroughs,

Glad Tidings of great JOY

“Joy to the world! The Lord is come.
Let earth receive her King
Let EVERY heart
Prepare Him room
And heaven and nature sing
And heaven and nature sing
And heaven and heaven and nature sing”

The words and lyrics of the old Christmas carol ‘Joy to the World’ were written in 1719 by Isaac Watts. I am challenged to choose JOY… WE are challenged to choose JOY despite any situation because we have a King who loves us sacrificially and cares about every detail.  May we SING and notice the song all around us in the beauty of the earth and the  ancient WORD that holds true and strong:

Nehemiah 8:10b “For the joy of the Lord is your strength”

Psalm 28:7 “The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and he helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise him.”

Hello Frosty December!

Morning walk in the crisp December air surrounded by colorful reminders of autumn and frosted sugary leaves scattered about. Another December has arrived for this “winter lover”! Warm memories and anticipation of snowflakes, Christmas lights, steamy mugs of cocoa, fireside chats, cozy flannel, and of course all the birthday preparations for the King swirl through my mind. Nature demonstrates the beauty of “letting go” as these leaves testify and I am looking forward to winter and the making of new memories full of love, smiles, and new beginnings.
